When your container is inspected: 72 hours, hour by hour

When your container is inspected: 72 hours, hour by hour

The conclusion first: an inspection is not an accident, it is a probability. What matters is who runs the process for you over those hours. This case came through our desk last month. An ordinary 40HQ of hardware fittings from a Dongguan factory, bound for the US west coast, with a Monday noon cut-off and a Monday night sailing. At 4 pm on Friday the broker called: this shipment had been selected for a manual inspection.

Hour 0: identify the type of inspection

X-ray inspection (H986) leaves the seal intact and usually clears within one to four hours — around three quarters clear immediately. A manual inspection means officers unpack on site and verify description, specification, quantity, marks and origin; a representative must attend to move, open and reseal the cargo. The first action is not panic — it is checking the documents line by line: is the goods description too generic, are specification and model complete, do container and seal numbers match what was actually loaded?

Hour 1: booking the slot

Inspection slots are queued. In peak season the next available slot is often the following day. Slot release generally happens around 09:00 and 14:00, and experienced brokers set alarms for it. Three things must run in parallel: document preparation, trucking from yard to inspection area, and getting a factory representative on site. Waiting for a slot before booking a truck is how half a day disappears.

Hour 20: the discrepancy

Officers found that two specifications were declared as model A while the cartons were marked A-1 — the same part with a revised suffix, but on site that reads as a declaration mismatch. We supplied the manufacturer's coding cross-reference within half an hour rather than amending the declaration, which would have pushed the shipment into the following week.

Hours 44 to 68: release and catching the vessel

Results are entered and the system updated within one to four hours. Release came at 5 pm on Saturday, the container re-entered the terminal on Sunday evening and was loaded. Sixty-eight hours between "how long will it take" and "it made the ship."

Who pays

Customs does not charge for the inspection itself. The consignee bears devanning, trucking to and from the inspection area, detention and storage beyond free time, and re-booking costs if the vessel is missed. Damage to outer packaging during unpacking is treated as normal wear and is effectively not claimable.

What Taixin does

Customs declaration and inspection are handled by our own team, not subcontracted: identifying the inspection type immediately, pre-checking documents, booking slots and trucks in parallel, attending on site, and having a contingency plan ready if the vessel cannot be caught.

Case details have been anonymised. Inspection time limits follow customs regulations; actual processing time depends on terminal slot availability and commodity type.
