Yantian vs Shekou: choosing the right Shenzhen port

Yantian vs Shekou: choosing the right Shenzhen port

Shenzhen has two main export port areas: Yantian in the east, and Shekou — including Chiwan and Mawan — in the west. Many exporters choose by asking which side has cheaper trucking. That question usually costs money somewhere else. Four factors decide it, in this order: trade lane → factory location → cut-off time → total cost.

Trade lane is the hard constraint

Yantian handles the deep-sea Europe and US trades. Its channel takes vessels of 24,000 TEU, and Maersk, MSC, Evergreen, COSCO and ONE call there密集. US west coast direct transit is typically 22–25 days. Shekou is strong on intra-Asia: Southeast Asia, Japan and Korea, the Middle East and Africa, with dense weekly sailings to Southeast Asia (5–7 days direct) and a barge network reaching more than 30 Pearl River ports. Cargo for Europe or the US essentially means Yantian. Cargo for Southeast Asia is faster through Shekou.

Factory location decides the trucking bill

Factories in Huizhou, Heyuan, Longgang, Pingshan or eastern Dongguan are closer to Yantian. Factories in Bao'an, Nanshan, Zhongshan, Foshan, Zhuhai or Jiangmen are closer to Shekou, or cheaper by barge. Note that Shekou's yards are scattered: empties may be collected at Chiwan, loaded in Bao'an and returned at Shekou — a triangle where per-kilometre quotes do not apply. Ask where pick-up, loading and return actually happen.

Cut-off time is where shipments fail

Yantian's cut-off runs later, sometimes to the early hours, which buys factories half a day of production. Shekou's cut-off is tighter because boxes must connect with barges.

Practical differences

  • Trucking cost: Shekou typically 15–20% lower
  • Peak congestion: pronounced at Yantian, with return slots gone quickly and six to eight hour queues
  • VGM: strictly enforced at both; some Shekou gates weigh directly
  • E-commerce declarations: Shekou is mature for 9610/9710 cross-border modes
  • Best fit: Yantian for full containers on Europe/US lanes; Shekou for smaller batches, LCL and split shipments

The short version

  1. Europe or US, full container → Yantian
  2. Southeast Asia, split shipments, barge connection → Shekou
  3. Unsure → send us the sailing schedule and factory address and we will compare both
Transit times and costs quoted are normal industry ranges; actual figures depend on carrier schedules, terminal operations and road conditions on the day.
